What Sustains You from the Inside?

Earlier this week, I posted a poem called “The Invitation” by Oriah Mountain Dreamer.  My favorite section of this poem is:

“I want to know
what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.”

We’ve all heard that everything in this world is fleeting – our successes, our failures, our relationships, our breakups, our joys, our sorrows.  I’m not saying those things are not important – certainly it’s incredibly important to fully feel each of those experiences.  But throughout the inevitable changes that occur in our lives, many of us tend to look for something constant to keep us grounded. We all find it in different ways. Some of us find it in reading books, fixing cars, observing a religious tradition, spending time with friends, or working out. It may not be the same thing that we spend our time doing to make a living, but it is the thing we do to regenerate our spirits during the difficult hours, and to remind ourselves what it is that we work for.

So one of the most important questions to ask yourself from time to time may be: What sustains me from the inside when everything else falls away?

And as your answers gradually come to you, consider whether you’re spending enough of your time doing these things, because if not, your inner life may be suffering, to the detriment of other parts of your life and your overall well-being.

What makes you come alive on the inside?
