On Intuition

Sometimes we wake up with a million things on our to-do list. Our brains may tell us to go here and there and do this but WAIT – not until you do THAT!

Meanwhile, your feet just sort of…do their own thing. You might obey your brain’s rabid commands…or you might do them in a different order. Or, you might just scrap them altogether and do something totally “mindless.”

I think that deep down, our bodies know what they’re doing. We’re guided by some kind of higher intelligence within that knows how to prioritize – even if its actions seem oddly-placed at the moment. Maybe something within knows that if you listen to your brain on command, you will run yourself ragged trying to comply with its endless demands.

And I think it works both ways. While sometimes you stop to watch a few minutes of some IQ-diminishing TV show before you can really begin to deal with things again, maybe you have been avoiding important tasks in your life and something within you – maybe guilt or dread or anxiety – fuels you to get back on task. We know what needs to be done, if only we’re able to listen, if only we’re able to silence the mind’s chatter of what we should be doing.

Maybe you saw this coming – but one great way to quiet the mind chatter is – you guessed it – meditation! Sitting quietly while focusing on the breath is a great tool to open up to your intuition. By learning to acknowledge your thoughts, but not follow them all the way to catastrophe-ville, you’re in a much better position to put things into proper perspective. You aren’t as susceptible to following your thoughts into unrealistic what-ifs, which largely contribute to the racing nature of your thoughts in the first place.

It may be best to pick one master here – either your brain or your higher inner wisdom. I’d suggest the latter, since the former may only drain your energies, drag you down, and give you little satisfaction in return.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic.  Feel free to share in the comments!
