The Fall Equinox is Upon Us!
“Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.” -George Eliot
Hi yogis! Did you know that tomorrow (Wednesday, September 23) is the Fall Equinox? In other words, the day and night will be of equal length. This occurrence marks the transition from spring and summer’s longer days and shorter nights, to fall and winter’s shorter days and longer nights.
From the Spring Equinox until this point, nature has been growing feverishly and shining verdantly in the sun for six months. Now, nature begins to retreat into a quieter state. Trees will release their leaves to the ground, the rain and cool breeze will soothe the scorching earth, and the longer nights will usher us back home at earlier times. And, of course, grocery stores will be replete with all items pumpkin-spice-flavored.
All of these external changes encourage us reflect upon the changes that are also happening within. We begin to contemplate the reasons behind our actions, look inwardly to survey what we need and don’t need, and let go of what no longer serves our highest interests. We begin to clear out the old – that which slows us down and keeps us sluggish – so that we can make way for fresher inspiration to guide our lives.
At first, fall may feel like the sad grind that follows the long sun-kissed days of summer splendor. But, once we acknowledge our need for change and growth, we can begin to use this time to take inventory of what’s going on inside and evaluate what stays and what goes. That way, we can be poised and ready at the Spring Equinox for optimal growth, without any unnecessary clutter crowding our inner landscape.
Happy Fall Equinox, everyone! We hope this is a peaceful time that allows you to pause, slow down, and re-connect with what your inner compass is asking of you.
Also, please help us usher in the Equinox on Wednesday, September 23 from 1-3pm with 108 Sun Salutations! This event is totally free to the community and will be held at the North Studio. Don’t worry, you don’t have to do all 108 Sun Sals – you can do as few or as many as you’d like, and you are encouraged to take rest anytime. It’s a a fun way to celebrate the new season with our local yoga community!
